As I mentioned in a previous article, after two decades of participation in our old church, not satisfied with the transformation and paths it was taking, we decided to return to the original way of gathering: at home, without labels, denomination, liturgies, and clergy.
The distancing from a religious community can bring with it a deep feeling of invisibility. Those who, like us, chose to disconnect from churches where they congregated for many years often find themselves facing social, emotional, and spiritual disconnection. The sad reality is that, by following a new path, many feel left out and forgotten.
Exclusion is a harsh and lonely experience, marked by a sense of abandonment. When questioning practices they consider inconsistent or hypocritical, the response they often receive is rejection. Bonds that were once strengthened by faith turn into barriers, and those who choose to take a new direction are often labeled, judged, and even isolated by the leadership, thus experiencing a profound sense of loneliness.
The biblical passage of 1 Corinthians 13 reminds us of the fundamental importance of love. Without it, our actions and beliefs lose their deepest meaning. Love is the essence of Christianity, the force that should unite even in the midst of disagreements. Regardless of individual choices, compassion is the foundation upon which true communion stands. It is crucial to understand the unique spiritual journeys of each individual, recognizing that true communion can flourish beyond the institutional structures of the church, in authentic connections that transcend barriers.
For those who feel invisible or excluded, it is important to remember that God's love is constant and unshakeable. Seeking communion with others who share the same values, even outside of familiar structures, can be a journey of spiritual renewal. Exploring new ways of gathering in communion and worship can open doors to finding new communities that live out the true love of Christ.
The distancing from a community can be seen as a new beginning, an opportunity to rediscover the authenticity and Christian love that connects us, thus overcoming invisibility and exclusion. Know that you are not alone on this journey. Many have walked this path and are willing to offer support, strengthening your faith and renewing your spirituality. Together, it is possible to find mutual support and authentic ways of living the Christian life.
